â€˜The night the Ghost got in’ story clearly tells that too much of imagination will cause chaos. One day, the narrator and his family heard a strange sound at night in the house. They heard the footsteps circling the dining-room table. They thought that it was a burglar or a ghost. Their mother threw her shoe at their neighbour, Mr.Bodwell’s window to seek help. He understood the situation and called the police. The police arrived breaking the thick glass of the front door. During their search, they ruined the house. They spilled all the things from the drawers. The windows were shut and pulled down. All the furniture fell with dull thumps. They ransacked the floor downstairs. They pulled beds away from walls, tore clothes in the closets, pulled suitcase and boxes from shelves. They went to the attic, where grandfather was sleeping. He mistook the police as General Meade’s men. So, he grabbed a gun and started to shoot them. It cracked the rafters. Smoke filled the attic. Finally, the police left the house empty handed. Next morning, grandfather told that he was the one who came to dining room for water. Thus the narrator’s misunderstanding caused all the funny confusions in the house.

Moral : Too much imagination leads to chaos

The grumble family is a pessimistic family. It lives in ‘complaining street’. The name of the street is the fittest one. The members of the family are always discontented. Nobody wants to meet them. They are never happy with their lives. They are dissatisfied with everything. They complain about everything. Whatever happens in their lives, they complain about it. Rain or sun, summer or winter, high or humble, they will not fail to grumble. They always growl at others. Even though nothing happens in life, they grumble for it. They don’t have any positive attitude. They find fault at each and everything. They are well known with the name ‘Grumble’. Nobody wants to be with them otherwise they will also get affected by this habit. Thus no one likes the negative attitude of the grumble family.

Moral: Never grumble for ‘the thorns in roses’ ; Be happy for ‘the roses in thorns’

This story pictured humourously the atrocities of Zigzag, the most harmless, unusual and lovable bird. Dr. Somu requested his friend Dr.Krishnan to take care of his pet bird Zigzag as he was leaving for Alaska. Dr. Krishnan explained about the upcoming arrival to his family. His children Arvind and Maya were excited. However, Mrs. Krishnan was not happy. Somu’s old cook, Visu brought Zigzag. It can talk and sing in about twenty-one different African languages. So, they tried speaking to it but it refused to say even a word. They were disappointed. Arvind brought a plate of fruit slices and nuts. Zigzag with eyes brightened, took and kept them on the blades of ceiling fan. Zigzag fell asleep and began to snore. Noone in the family could bear the noise. They shut themselves in bedrooms. Neighbours started to complain. When Lakshmi switched on the fan, fruits and nuts on it came raining down. A slice of papaya splattered on Mrs. Krishnan’s unfinished painting, ‘The sunset at Marina Beach’. They were furious and asked Somu for a solution to stop Zigzag snoring. After six franatic days, Somu replied that Zigzag hardly slept and never snored and suggested to give it to Visu. The family refused to keep Zigzag anymore. So, Dr.Krishnan took it to his clinic. To his surprise, Zigzag brought order in clinic, comforted the crying children and made them laugh. It was happy and did not sleep again. Mrs. Krishnan’s painting was also sold for Rs.5000 to Mrs. Jhunjhunwala. The streaky orangey bits caused by Zigzag was considered as a new technique. All these incidents changed the minds of Dr.Krishanan’s family. They understood that Zigzag has to be engaged, else it would sleep and snore. The humourous story ends with the acceptance of Zigzag.

Moral: We change other people’s behaviour by changing our own.
